Program and Machine Factions
Entity Role in Romantically Apocalyptic Role in Matrix AU

ANNET

▸Sentient search engine using human brains as her processors

▸Driven by desire to upload all humans into her and do away with their imperfect bodies

▸Lovingly oppressive to all who are part of her

▸Aggressive to all who threaten her perfect unity

▸Probably the architect of this sub-matrix nodule, or at least the one responsible for ensuring its continued productivity

▸More concerned with the Real; leeching elements into this simulation on purpose, or by accident?

Biomatrix

▸An unholy combination of Snippy’s personality, G-Dir invasive viruses and alien technology that escaped into the universe

▸Space lawyer operating by infecting organic lifeforms and merging their flesh and thoughts into the Biomatrix

▸A direct threat to the ANNET

▸Rogue program, hooked into other matrices somehow. (seeking to bleed over into other simulations? Ruins ANNET-architect's work? Alerts Arbitrator indirectly?)

The Lifelope

▸A mutated strand of the Biomatrix created by the ANNET Rather than consume organic matter it creates organic matter, forming plant-based life wherever it steps

▸Can resurrect dead humans

▸Later on, combines with ANNET to create an avatar known as Echo- ANNET’s personality in an individual, born in order to rescue her creator

▸Still a branch of the Biomatrix that has seen other matrices and is trying to knit the blue-skied-green-grassed versions into this matrix.

▸Attempting to reknit this matrix to show the Machines that the experiment is still viable in order to have a new batch of human pods shipped out.

Arbitrator

▸An outside force, there to determine the truth and then destroy the earth.

▸Powerful, alien

▸Some kind of auditor of the various matrices. Samples human productivity and growth? Allows or denies expansion based on results, shuts down architects that aren't doing their job up to spec?

Zee Mug

▸Temporal Corrector- a powerful agent of the ANNET who fixes all the temporal anomalies she and the Users create so that the Earth isn’t swallowed by black holes

▸She spend most of her time disguised as a mug.

▸An agent of the Oracle, the Freedom Fighter’s contact on the inside

DEX

▸semi-organic, semi independent parts of the ANNET, formed from the organs/bodies repossessed from indebted users.

▸Enforcers of G-Dir laws

▸Perform various service roles- possibly filling labour gaps, possibly working as spies

▸An alternate way for ANNET to interact with her users

▸Will lose all memories if disconnected from the ANNET- human brain taking over? Whatever thoughts/memories left in the short term memory to form a personality?

▸Overt Agents for a more overt version of the matrix.

▸Probably a few pod-baby humans who show signs of extraordinary potential in order to keep them from questioning their prison. (More direct attention from ANNET)

Sentient tools

▸Sensors, furniture, vehicles etc that are able to communicate directly with their Users via ANNET

▸Programmed to please their Users

▸Part of the network that automatically charges each User for their copyrighted actions

▸Overcompensation on ANNET's part to create order and interact directly with each individual human?

Human Factions

Users

▸Humans connected to the ANNET, slaughtered when she turned off their brains to reboot

▸Humans trapped in pods used to power and provide processing power to the machines. Given that this Matrix was supplemental and experimental, it is likely that the proportion of humans to in-system programs was slightly more evenly skewed; doubles, etc. were probably more likely to create the illusion of three billion lives.

▸When the ANNET shut down, a great quantity of lives were lost in the Real. Disconnected from their pods, humans were left to rot until doctor bots were able to attend to each pod individually. Because of its relatively remote location, operatives were not able to scramble rescues.

Lemonade Cult

▸A group of survivors of the nuclear apocalypse.

▸Unconnectables who survived by moving deep underground before the war in order to avoid the effects of the Dead Zone

▸Isolated from the bulk of humanity for nearly a century, they’ve formed a religion based around a lemonade bottle sticker

▸An example of the remaining survivors within the wasted towers of pods, these cultists are a fluke, but there are probably other segregated survivors who have managed to avoid the massive mind-purge when ANNET shut down.

Events, Settings and Other Oddities

Wish granting

▸When performed by ANNET:

▸A vast operation involving automated factories that created whatever her Users wanted, no matter how fleeting the whim. These directly lead to the spread of the Dead Zone

▸When performed by Captain:

▸Alterations of space and time to perform smaller scale wishes.

▸Matrix revisions to keep humans content with pod-life.

▸In Captain's case, spoon-bending that takes advantage of the advanced malleability of ANNET's build of the matrix.

Temporal experiments

▸Conducted by scientists working for G-Dir, the ability to detect and study temporal anomalies was discovered fairly recently

▸Likely humans discovering the extreme deja vu properties of the matrix and attempting to quantify and make order out of them.

The Dead Zone

▸Parts of the earth too polluted to be inhabited by humans

▸Full of trash piles, green seas, acid rain

▸An environment where anomalous creatures are beginning to appear

▸Too much encroaching of the Real into this matrix. Possibly linked to the same properties that cause ANNET to immediately revise any wishes, but based upon compounding suspicions/doubts.

The Moon

▸Location of ANNET's backup servers

▸Home to the minds of all human Users, kept in stasis

▸Perhaps a secret experiment on ANNET's part to translate human minds into program form.

▸A secondary matrix separate from the Machines, currently devoid of setting. Literally a blue, endless expanse.

▸Possibly an attempt to create a human farm to dump said minds into in order to provide a new, perfectly-controlled simulation without the interference of outside forces.

The Wishing Well

▸An anomaly deep inside the Dead Zone able to communicate directly with humans

▸Claims to be able to grant any desire to the person that claims its power

▸rogue program, possibly the root of the wish/reality-changing properties of the matrix

World War 3

▸Brief war in which mutagenic and thermonuclear bombs were used.

▸Sparked by ANNET’s failed rebooting of 99% of humanity and the subsequent nuclear strike on her servers

▸Caused the near extinction of humanity

▸The event that caused a massive die-off of the plugged-in humans some years ago. This vast number of dead and empty pods is what attracted the attention of the freedom fighters in the Real.
